Introduction to Survey Data Analysis – 2026
A workshop focused on the application of IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0 for survey data analysis was conducted by Dr. Jennifer Gao and Prof. W.M To from the Faculty of Business. This workshop was held in Room A210 from 19:00 to 23:00 on 21 January 2026. Prof. To acted as the main speaker, while Dr. Gao provided additional guidance to the thirty-five Management students attending the workshop.
Prof. To explained how to create a theoretical model and the corresponding questionnaire through an extensive literature review. He advised students to determine the appropriate sample size using a general guideline of 5 to 10 responses per item, as recommended in Hair et al.’s (2008) book, Multivariate Data Analysis, or utilizing an online sample size calculator developed by Daniel Soper. He emphasized that the quality of the analyzed results is heavily reliant on the quality of the survey data gathered. Thus, researchers must pay utmost attention to the data collection procedure and ensure that respondents understand the impact of their responses on the survey results. By utilizing a questionnaire and 170 sets of data provided by a group of final-year students, Prof. To illustrated how to pre-process data in Excel, specifically demonstrating how to “find and replace” categories in Chinese/English with numerical values. The processed data could subsequently be imported into IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0. He and the participants examined the characteristics of the gathered data using descriptive statistics, which included frequency, minimum, maximum, mean, standard deviation, and cross-tabulation. They also conducted various t-tests, such as one-sample t-tests and independent-samples t-tests, to investigate whether the responses on specific items were significantly different from the midpoint and whether demographic variables, like gender, affected responses. Prof. To then demonstrated how to obtain mean item scores using “Transform - Compute Variable” and performed correlation and regression analyses. During this four-hour workshop, participants obtained valuable hands-on experience in using IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0.
