Living the Sustainable Future

A decade after the United Nations launched its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the latest SDG Report reveals that only 35% of the 169 targets are on track. This calls for renewed collective action and the active engagement of younger generations to shape a sustainable future. In pursuit of this vision, Macao Polytechnic University integrates sustainability into education and practice through diverse campus initiatives. These programmes take students beyond classrooms into nature and communities, fostering sustained values and cultivating habits that drive lasting change.

Change Begins with Awareness

Driving sustainable development starts with understanding. In celebration of Earth Day, the Student Affairs Office organised the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Promotion Fair in April. The event brought together multiple governmental departments and NGOs, featuring exhibitions, interactive booths and engaging games. Highlights included health information stations and clothing recycling points, delivering sustainability concepts in a fun and accessible way that drew enthusiastic student participation.

Building on the success of the Promotion Fair, a series of environmental initiatives were organised, including beach clean-ups, eco-hiking tours, wetland learning trips, marine conservation activities, and visits to water resource facilities. These programmes aim to foster students' awareness of sustainable development and social responsibility while strengthening collaboration between academia, government, and the community. Anchored in SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), these efforts weave sustainability into campus life, creating a dynamic green momentum for the future.

Harmony with the Ocean

Under clear skies, the MPU Sustainable Development Society and student volunteer teams gathered at Hac Sa Beach for the "Love the Earth" Beach Clean-up Campaign. They worked along the shoreline to remove plastic bottles, fishing nets, fragments of fishing gear, and other coastal waste, sorting the collected items for proper disposal. The Society noted that the activity deepened participants' understanding of the UN SDGs, highlighted the environmental impact of plastic products, and reinforced the importance of integrating eco-friendly practices into daily life.

Beyond reducing marine litter, marine biodiversity conservation is equally vital. The "Marine Exploration and Conservation" study tour drew a group of students to the Ocean Park Academy in Hong Kong, where they observed aquatic animals up close and learned about marine ecosystems. The programme explored the intricate links between habitats and food chains, while examining how global climate change disrupts oceanic ecological balance. Through specialised workshops, students gained insights into issues such as marine resource depletion and ecological crises, and their implications for human life, inviting reflection on how humanity can coexist harmoniously with marine ecosystems.

Whispers of Wetlands and Woodlands

If the coastlines are the Earth's breath, wetlands are the cradle of life. During an immersive exploration of Erjing Bay Wetland in Hengqin, students transformed to nature detectives, binoculars in hand, guided by ecological experts in search of avian wonders such as the Eurasian spoonbill, Pacific reef heron, and green-winged teal. Guided by ecological instructors, they observed and studied the unique features of migratory birds, gaining fresh insights into the importance of terrestrial biodiversity and wetland ecosystems.

Another group ventured into the hills on an ecological hiking tour, uncovering the marvels of land-based biodiversity. Led by professional guides, students trekked through the trails, learning about plant characteristics and conservation principles along the way. They discovered Macao's native species (trees, flowers, insects, and birds) whiling experiencing the beauty of nature through sweat and laughter. Participants described the experience as profoundly meaningful, awakening a sense of connection with the natural world and reinforcing their role as a new generation committed to building a sustainable future.

One Step at a Time Makes a Journey

Returning to campus, a gentle fragrance of herbs drifts from the Hundred Herbs Garden. This ecological conservation initiative invites students to plant and nurture herbs themselves, deepening their understanding of the vital role plants play in climate regulation and environmental protection. Guided by mentors, students learn through hands-on experience and observation, gaining insight into the delicate balance between humanity and nature. Members of the Sustainable Development Society share that from sowing seeds to watering and harvesting, they witness the endless cycle of life in nature. Through this vibrant greenery, they hope to convey a powerful message of sustainability.

Every activity is an awakening. At MPU, holistic education drives our mission, inspiring students to become active contributors to ecological civilisation. By embedding sustainability into campus culture and daily life, the MPU community stands united in advancing global sustainable development goals, ensuring the story of our blue planet continues.
