3,000 Freshers Kickstart Their MPU Story

Macao Polytechnic University kicked off the 2025/2026 academic year with an opening ceremony in August, welcoming 3,000 bright new minds from Macao, the Greater Bay Area, across China, Portuguese-speaking countries, and regions worldwide. From bachelor's to doctoral programmes, these students are setting out on an exciting academic adventure as they strive to turn their dreams into reality.

Inspiring Innovation and Vision

During the Opening Ceremony held at the multisport pavilion, Rector Professor Im Sio Kei delivered the inaugural lecture, encouraging students to aim high, uphold the spirit of loving the country and Macao, and champion creativity and innovation as drivers of social and cultural progress. He reaffirmed MPU's mission to cultivate globally minded, socially responsible professionals through interdisciplinary education and research.

Adding inspiration to the occasion, Olympic champions Jiao Liuyang (London 2012 Women's 200m Butterfly) and Zhang Yanyang (Beijing 2008 Women's Quadruple Sculls), now doctoral students in Physical Education and Sports Science, shared their journeys of resilience and pledged to channel athletic determination into academic success. Faculty representative Dr Áine Ní Bhroin from the MPU-Bell English Language Centre encouraged students to stay passionate, curious, and open-minded, making full use of MPU's rich resources and platforms to achieve their aspirations.

Advancing Academic and Cultural Exchange

For this academic year, MPU has launched four new postgraduate programmes: PhD in Applied Language Sciences, PhD in Physical Education and Sports Science, MSc in Environmental Intelligence, and MSc in Sports Technology and Innovation, providing students with broader opportunities for advanced studies. These programmes align closely with societal needs and cutting-edge technologies, reflecting MPU's philosophy of integrating academic excellence with practical application.

The campus welcomed new students with a series of orientation activities, including programme briefings, campus tours, Student Activities Fair, International Student Welcome Day, Sino-Portuguese Cultural Festival and Crime Prevention Week, all aimed at helping students adapt quickly, build connections, and explore diverse interests. In support of the Macao SAR Government's "Campus Anti-Fraud Vaccine Programme", representatives from the Judiciary Policy Force delivered an anti-fraud seminar to raise awareness. Amid this vibrant academic and cultural atmosphere, students are ready to begin a new chapter of growth and discovery.
