Recently, Stanford University and Elsevier's Mendeley Data released the latest "World's Top 2% Scientists" list, while Clarivate announced its 2025 "Highly Cited Researchers" ranking. Macao Polytechnic University achieved remarkable recognition in both lists, underscoring the University's growing influence and research excellence on the global stage.
12 Scholars Named Among the World's Top 2%
The World's Top 2% Scientists ranking, led by Professor John P.A. Ioannidis and his team at Stanford University, is based on Scopus citation data and evaluates researchers across six key indicators: total citations, h-index, Schreiber Hm-index, citations as sole author, and citations as first or last author. Covering 22 major disciplines and 174 subfields, the ranking identifies the top 2% of scientists worldwide from a pool of over seven million.
This year, 12 MPU scholars were included in the Annual Scientific Impact Ranking, with six of them also featured in the Lifetime Impact Ranking. Their research spans diverse and cutting-edge fields, including chemistry, information and communication technology, artificial intelligence and image processing, intelligent systems, nursing, economics and business sciences, and communication studies, reflecting the University's broad-based contributions to global research.
The honoured scholars are Professor To Wai Ming from the Faculty of Business; Professor Yao Xiaojun, Professor Liu Huanxiang, and Visiting Professor Sheng Hao from the Faculty of Applied Sciences; Professor Gao Lingling from the Faculty of Health Sciences and Sports; Associate Professor Teng Feng from the Faculty of Languages and Translation; Professor Wei Leyi, Professor Chen Lin, and Associate Professor Wang Wei from the Engineering Research Centre of Applied Technology on Machine Translation and Artificial Intelligence; and Professor Ivan Ka-Wai Lai and Professor Xu Jing from the Centre for Gaming and Tourism Studies.
Drug Discovery Expert Among the World's Top 1%
Clarivate's Highly Cited Researchers list recognises scholars who have published multiple highly cited papers over the past 11 years, ranking in the top 1% by citations within their field in the Web of Science Core Collection. In 2025, Professor Yao Xiaojun at the Faculty of Applied Sciences, was named in the Cross-Field category, joining five distinguished scholars from Macao in receiving this honour. Professor Yao is a leading figure in AI-driven drug discovery, molecular simulation, and anticancer drug research. He has published over 160 papers in top-tier international journals, with more than 22,000 citations. He has also led numerous major research projects funded by China's National Natural Science Foundation and the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund, driving innovation at the intersection of artificial intelligence and biomedicine.
