A Symphony of Language and Technology
Machine Translation's Triple-Helix Innovation Leap

Language is the bridge that connects cultures, guiding humanity in its quest to understand the world. Technology is the engine that powers this exchange, making communication faster, clearer, and more dynamic. At Macao Polytechnic University, a century of expertise in Chinese-Portuguese translation education meets the transformative potential of artificial intelligence. With deep roots in linguistics research and a bold vision for the future, MPU is pioneering advancements in language technology. Its mission is to turn language into a catalyst for regional cooperation and global dialogue. This endeavours positions Macao at the forefront of global language technology and opens new doors for government, business and society in Macao to connect with the world.

Tracing Back to the First Idea

Globalisation and the surge of artificial intelligence have transformed how we communicate and connect. In this shifting landscape, language technology becomes a driving force. Drawing on its strengths in Chinese-Portuguese translation, Macao Polytechnic University embraced this challenge early, making machine translation the cornerstone of its research strategy. Over a decade ago, long before AI became a household term, MPU pioneered a world-leading Chinese-Portuguese neural network machine translation platform and a trilingual speech recognition system for Chinese, Portuguese, and English. By 2019, the first Ministry of Education (MoE) Engineering Research Centre in Hong Kong and Macao was established at MPU for machine translation and artificial intelligence applications, integrating education, research, industry, and global collaboration to turn innovation into social value.

This journey began with a simple yet urgent question: how can technology ease the burden of translation while improving quality? Professor Im Sio Kei, Rector of MPU and head of the MoE research centre, recalls the pressing need: "Macao preserved a vast archive of Portuguese documents, and translating them into Chinese demanded enormous resources. Both Chinese and Portuguese are official languages here, so every government document must exist in bilingual form. Daily operation involves constant translation. I often wondered, how can we use technology to support translators and raise standards?" That question became a mission. Today, the research team continues to advance the same conviction: to empower language services through technology, unlocking human potential and delivering efficiency without quality compromise.

Triple Helix Synergy and Precise Positioning

Breakthroughs begin in the lab and flourish through collaboration. At MPU, success in the field of language technology stems from a multidisciplinary team of experts in AI, big data, linguistics, and information technology, united by a shared focus on applied research and engineering innovation. To strengthen this ecosystem, MPU partnered with Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and Beijing-based Global Tone Communication Technology to establish a joint machine translation laboratory in Macao. This hub concentrates on corpus processing, neural network translation engines, natural language processing, and linguistic big data analytics, while expanding an international research network.

As large-scale models like ChatGPT and DeepSeek dominate headlines, MPU pursues a different path: depth and precision in specialised language domains. "Our advantage lies in cultural expertise and interdisciplinary support," notes Professor Im Sio Kei, Rector of MPU. "We continuously refine algorithms and rigorously audit data." He emphasises that AI-driven translation often struggles with nuanced semantics, literary devices, or culturally embedded meanings, areas where human judgement still prevails. Yet, with MPU's professional calibration and optimisation, its machine translation products consistently outperform mainstream software, delivering some of the most accurate solutions worldwide.

Turning Research into Social Impact

The true vitality of research lies in its ability to serve society. MPU's self-developed translation systems, born from real-world needs, exemplify this principle. Built on advanced neural network models, tools such as the Chinese-Portuguese official document translation system and the trilingual speech recognition platform have been adopted by more than 40 entities ranging from government departments to enterprises and institutions across different countries and regions. These technologies have significantly aided them in enhancing translation quality and efficiency, delivering tangible social and economic benefits while reinforcing Macao's role as a Sino-Lusophone platform.

The success of MPU's machine translation project offers valuable insights for integrating the triple helix: academia, industry, and research. Professor Im Sio Kei shares, "To make research truly impactful, two challenges must be addressed: choosing the right topics and ensuring real-world usage. This requires cultivating talents who understand both technology and market needs, building professional teams that focus on technology transfer, and creating strong policy support that focuses on local industry priorities, provides channels for dialogue between researchers and enterprises, and fosters collaboration for mutual benefit."

Guided by this vision, MPU champions a dual focus on technology and market, encouraging faculty-industry engagement to turn lab outputs into practical solutions. This dynamic exchange forms the core value of MPU's research ecosystem, an engine for sustainable innovation.

Extending Language Technology into Education

Language technology at MPU is extending from research labs into education and everyday life. Building on the world's largest and most accurate Chinese-Portuguese parallel corpus, MPU has launched mobile learning apps such as Diz Lá! and the Chinese-Portuguese News Learning Platform, enabling learners to study Portuguese anytime anywhere in an engaging way. Innovation also extends to tourism. The Chinese-Portuguese Smart Travel app provides visitors speaking either languages with intelligent travel planning, supporting Macao's vision as a world-class tourism and leisure centre.

From campus to the global stage, MPU amplifies its impact through the World Chinese-Portuguese Translation Competition. Attracting scholars and young talents worldwide, the event not only enhances the visibility of language translation and technology but also enriches machine translation corpora. This fusion of culture and technology sparks breakthroughs, strengthens global collaboration, and positions Macao and MPU as a vibrant hub for linguistic innovation.

Powering Connectivity on the Belt and Road

Language technology is evolving into a strategic resource for global governance and international collaboration. Against the backdrop of Macao's role as a Sino-Lusophone platform and the Belt and Road Initiative, MPU's innovation model is cultural-driven, technology-enabled, and regionally connected. This approach enhances precision and efficiency in cross-border business communication and cultural exchange. The resultant products widely adopted across Belt and Road countries generate tens of millions in economic value (MOP) annually, aggregating to a cumulative economic value of MOP 200 million. Through collaboration with institutions in the Greater Bay Area and Portuguese-speaking countries, MPU is actively advancing the development of a comprehensive Belt-and-Road language big data repository, with a focus on corpus integration, application alignment, and technological standard development.

Looking ahead, these technical models are designed for scalability, ready to extend to additional languages and build an intelligent, multilingual application ecosystem. This vision will foster digital integration across the Greater Bay Area, Portuguese-speaking countries, and other multilingual regions worldwide. MPU firmly believes that language technology is no longer a mere auxiliary tool for linguistic processing; it has become a critical infrastructure for supporting multilingual societies and driving economic and cultural exchange. From Macao to the global stage, the symphony of language and technology continues to unfold.
