Centre for Continuing Education of MPU Hosts “Exercise is Medicine” Health Seminar

To support the development of Macao’s “Big Health” industry and promote the importance of scientific exercise in disease prevention and rehabilitation, the Centre for Continuing Education (CEC) of Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) and the China-Macao Physical Fitness Association recently hosted a health seminar titled “Exercise is Medicine: Exercise Prescriptions for the Prevention and Rehabilitation of Cancer and Cognitive Impairment.” Co-organised by the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Exercise for Health Academy, the seminar attracted participants from the medical sector and the general public, drawing an enthusiastic response.

The seminar featured presentations by Professor Sai Chuen Stanley Hui, Dr. James Ho-pong Wan, and Dr. Lee Yiu-man from the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, alongside Mr. Hui Kam-fai, Chairman and Coach of the Physical Fitness General Association Macao-China. Topics included an introduction to "Exercise is Medicine," the role of exercise in cancer rehabilitation, and the relationship between exercise and cognitive impairment. Through a combination of theoretical insights and practical exercise demonstrations, the event aimed to enhance public awareness regarding scientifically-based exercise and health management. During the seminar, Ms. Hau Veng San, Director of the Centre for Continuing Education at the Macao Polytechnic University (MPU), and Mr. Tang Hon Cheong, President of the Physical Fitness General Association Macao-China, expressed their hope that this collaborative event would serve as a platform for exchange between sports science experts from Hong Kong and Macao. They aimed to introduce professional theories and practical workout methods to Macao, translating cutting-edge health knowledge into healthy habits that citizens can adopt in their daily lives. The seminar also included a Q&A session and interactive experiences featuring Tai Chi Qigong and dynamic floor-based ball exercises, fostering a lively atmosphere of interaction between the speakers and attendees.

Other distinguished guests in attendance included Mr. Ho King Lun, Member of the Legislative Assembly of the Macao SAR and Chairman of the Federation of Macau China Sports General Associations; Dr. Chao Lai Meng, Consultant in Community Rehabilitation and representative of the Health Bureau; Professor Ng San Fan, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Sports at MPU; and Dr. Chan Wai Sin and Dr. Chan Wai Hong, Medical Consultants for the China-Macau Physical Fitness Association.
