Centre for Continuing Education of MPU Organises "Advanced Training for Senior Student Counsellors 2026" Course

To enhance the professional practical capabilities of student guidance and social service personnel in Macao, the Centre for Continuing Education (CEC) of Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) organized the "Advanced Training for Senior Student Counsellors 2026" Course for the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau. A total of 24 students completed the course in mid-July and were awarded certificates.

At the closing ceremony, Ng Siu Lai, President of the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau, stated in her speech that with the rapid development of society, the demands and cases faced by frontline community workers have become increasingly complex, and frontline personnel should possess more professional competence. She emphasised that the General Union will strive to lead the team toward more specialised counselling fields in the future, expecting to provide the general public with higher-quality community support and psychological counselling services through close cooperation and continuous training with Macao Polytechnic University and other higher education institutions.

Hau Veng San, Director of the Centre for Continuing Education of Macao Polytechnic University, congratulated the students for completing this advanced training, and encouraged them to transform the knowledge into a strong backing for frontline work, uphold professional ethics in counselling, give full play to their strengths, guide the healthy growth of students, and help to construct a harmonious campus and community.

Two student representatives shared their learning outcomes and insights. They expressed that the course arrangement was highly practical, and the counselling theories and coping techniques were real-life situations, enabling them to apply what they learned to frontline services and effectively enhancing their ability and confidence in handling complex cases. They believed that in counselling work, theoretical knowledge must be closely combined with daily practice, and critical thinking should be maintained to display the professional spirit of helping others.

This course followed the latest developments in Macao campus services, covering a total of four major practical topics, including "Supervision Concepts and Practical Skills", which deepened students' application, management capabilities, and understanding of supervisor roles and models through theory and practical drills. "Advanced Practice in S.E.N. Support and Domestic Violence" strengthened the understanding of behavioral characteristics and support strategies for school-age children with special educational needs. "Identifying Potential Student Bullying Behaviors—Non-Punitive Intervention Strategies" assisted counsellors in responding to campus and cyberbullying and establishing systematic non-punitive intervention mechanisms. "Summary and Evaluation" helped students to consolidate their adherence to professional ethics and enhanced decision-making and judgment abilities in difficult situations.

The Centre for Continuing Education of Macao Polytechnic University will continue to collaborate with the community to offer professional courses that meet the needs of social development, such as areas in social services, education and physical fitness, to cultivate multi-skilled professional talents and support the development of Macao's industry.
